Sometimes in life we come to a point where things aren’t the same anymore. We want to stay on our beds in the morning not because we are sleepy but because we are tired of life; there’s no reason to get up. It seems that our future holds the same color as the dim light in our room, there’s no sense of hope. All we can see of our lives is black, gray, and white.
The thought sinks our heart and we want to cry. We want to yell, scream out this pain inside. But there’s no excitement, no energy. We want attention but feel like we’re stuck in an island, where we are the only survivor. Our heart sinks again as tears splash against our pillow; we haven’t even managed to get out feet on the ground.
How did we get here?
Depression can be one of the toughest struggles a human can face; it’s unlike a bruise that can heal within a week. No, depression is like an inner wound that continues to bleed; it over shadows us nonstop.
Depression can occur for many reasons. It can stem from traumatic childhood experiences like being bullied, parents getting divorced, loss of a loved one, etc. It can also happen after a break-up or unexpected change. However, many times our coping habits we create for ourselves like hiding away, hating the world, and consuming alcohol and drugs don’t help us in the long-run. We must learn how to engage our emotions and navigate to a better mood.
We first must accept it. It’s a coping mechanism that our bodies create from any or other traumatic experiences. But only because we accept it doesn’t mean we should let it control our lives. We have control to how we react to situations. We can learn to channel our emotions.
We are not alone, 1 of 5 teenagers will go through depression in their lives. The depression we suffer from can be too much for us but seeking help from professionals can help monitor how we react to it.
Even when there’s no hope or motivation, we know that once the clouds move away, light will shine upon us. However, it may not seem like that right now, so we have to keep moving forward. Life doesn’t wait but a better future waits for us only if we keep moving forward.
“The truth is that our finest moments are most likely to occur when we are feeling deeply uncomfortable, unhappy, or unfulfilled. For it is only in such moments, propelled by our discomfort, that we are likely to step out of our ruts and start searching for different ways or truer answers.” -Unknown
