Teens these days, particularly girls, can get so extremely caught up with their own body image. The pain can be excruciating sometimes as you compare yourself to others (whether real life or from photo-shopped magazine covers and websites) and wish you could change this, this or that. But — now here’s something totally revolutionary– have you ever considered changing your perspective COMPLETELY? Like, thinking about your body in a way that your mind has never even comprehended before?
After watching the award-winning documentary on body image, America the Beautiful, one segment in particular stuck in my mind years later. Eve Ensler of the Vagina Monologues has an incredible message to bring you- perhaps this is the first time you’ve ever considered something like this. Keep in mind that its common among Western women and girls to be judgmental and unhappy with their bodies, but around the world, some people are completely free from trapping themselves in this cycle.
Watch this short but incredible description that Eve Ensler provides when she visits a rural woman in South Africa who sets her straight on body image:
Tomorrow, when you pack your bags from school and get dressed, think: “I am going to love my body today.” When you get some time alone later in the evening, set aside some time to write a list of all of the things your body does for you. You will be amazed at how long the list becomes but more importantly, all of the miraculous tasks your body can do. The Human Body is a miracle. And you have one. Why be anyone else when you can be YOUR best?
