Night time is when my anxiety attacks seem to peak. My brain is just sitting and thinking about anything and everything in the world, especially things that I am able to avoid thinking about throughout my day. These thoughts are usually the worst case scenario and the hyperbolic worries that are really emotionally damaging. “What if?”. When these two words come up, I know that it’s time to find a distraction.

If there’s one thing that is most helpful when you’re having an anxiety attack or even just feel the anxiety building up inside of you, it’s the knowledge that there is always an escape. Having somewhere to go when you really need to get away from all of the things that bring up those bad feelings of stress and anxiety is extremely important and can save you from losing yourself in a hard time.

Everyone in the world seems to have the remedy to cure stress. Hot tea, soft music, scented candles and so on. I for one happen to prefer coffee over tea and singing harmonies over the sound of a wave maker. That’s not to say that these well-known remedies don’t work—I happen to thoroughly enjoy my after-finals-week bubble baths. But there are some unspoken truths about stress relief that I have recently discovered that have changed the way I look at my mental stresses.

One great way to start moving towards the opposite direction and start overcoming our negative thinking is to create positive affirmations about ourselves. An affirmation is the claim that something is true. These affirmation starts persuading the mind and making them also feel true because it’s difficult for the mind to distinguish from what’s fantasy and reality.
